A Functional Taxonomy of Data Quality Tools: Insights from Science and Practice
For organizations data quality is a prerequisite for automated decision making and agility. To provide high quality data, numerous tools have emerged that support the different steps of data quality management. Yet, these tools vary in their functional composition and support for current trends, such as AI. There is no common and up-to-date perception of the capabilities a data quality tool should fulfill. In this paper, we develop a functional taxonomy of data quality tools to address this shortcoming and provide a holistic overview of data quality functionalities. We derived the taxonomy through an iterative approach of deductive reasoning by conducting a systematic literature review and inductive reasoning by reviewing existing data quality tools and gaining insights from experts. By applying our taxonomy to 18 commercial data quality tools we aim to provide the reader with a review of data quality tools and reach a functional consensus in the field
MakerSpaces and Value Creation in Start-ups in Germany
Initiatives and projects such as the âExcellence Start-up Center.NRWâ aim to increase the competitiveness of Germany through startups and has the explicit goal of creating new and sustainable jobs. In addition, so- called MakerSpaces are being created in parallel in many areas, which are considered as creative areas and are intended to support the construction of prototypes and the testing of hypotheses to create value for potential start-ups and to establish a valid business model. The question here is whether these initiatives and projects provide support for industrial value creation in Germany. This would require production and logistics to be considered when creating and developing new business models. Established methods of production research (e.g. simultaneous engineering) and logistics (e.g. supply chain management) should be taken into account. The results of a short survey â by questioning potential startups and advisors â show whether production and logistics are already considered in the consulting by the MakerSpaces or if there are further unmet needs
UNDERSTANDING DATA TRUSTS
Finding ways to share data while upholding data sovereignty is a key issue to succeed in building the digital economy. One way to achieve this is to install data intermediaries â so-called data trusts â that facilitate this process. Their role is to orchestrate data sharing for organizations and individuals by ensuring that data sovereignty (i.e., the right to decide how data can be used) remains with the data provider. However, while the concept is promising, research on it is still in its infancy. The paper tackles exactly that issue as we collect data on data trusts (interviews and publically available information) and construct a general solution space for designing data trusts. With our research, we provide an overview as well as options for designing data trusts
Indigenous use and bio-efficacy of medicinal plants in the Rasuwa District, Central Nepal
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>By revealing historical and present plant use, ethnobotany contributes to drug discovery and socioeconomic development. Nepal is a natural storehouse of medicinal plants. Although several ethnobotanical studies were conducted in the country, many areas remain unexplored. Furthermore, few studies have compared indigenous plant use with reported phytochemical and pharmacological properties.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Ethnopharmacological data was collected in the Rasuwa district of Central Nepal by conducting interviews and focus group discussions with local people. The informant consensus factor (F<sub>IC</sub>) was calculated in order to estimate use variability of medicinal plants. Bio-efficacy was assessed by comparing indigenous plant use with phytochemical and pharmacological properties determined from a review of the available literature. Criteria were used to identify high priority medicinal plant species.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>A total of 60 medicinal formulations from 56 plant species were documented. Medicinal plants were used to treat various diseases and disorders, with the highest number of species being used for gastro-intestinal problems, followed by fever and headache. Herbs were the primary source of medicinal plants (57% of the species), followed by trees (23%). The average F<sub>IC</sub> value for all ailment categories was 0.82, indicating a high level of informant agreement compared to similar studies conducted elsewhere. High F<sub>IC </sub>values were obtained for ophthalmological problems, tooth ache, kidney problems, and menstrual disorders, indicating that the species traditionally used to treat these ailments are worth searching for bioactive compounds: <it>Astilbe rivularis</it>, <it>Berberis asiatica</it>, <it>Hippophae salicifolia, Juniperus recurva</it>, and <it>Swertia multicaulis</it>. A 90% correspondence was found between local plant use and reported plant chemical composition and pharmacological properties for the 30 species for which information was available. Sixteen medicinal plants were ranked as priority species, 13 of which having also been prioritized in a country-wide governmental classification.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>The <it>Tamang </it>people possess rich ethnopharmacological knowledge. This study allowed to identify many high value and high priority medicinal plant species, indicating high potential for economic development through sustainable collection and trade.</p
Correction to: Two years later: Is the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic still having an impact on emergency surgery? An international cross-sectional survey among WSES members
Background: The SARS-CoV-2 pandemic is still ongoing and a major challenge for health care services worldwide. In the first WSES COVID-19 emergency surgery survey, a strong negative impact on emergency surgery (ES) had been described already early in the pandemic situation. However, the knowledge is limited about current effects of the pandemic on patient flow through emergency rooms, daily routine and decision making in ES as well as their changes over time during the last two pandemic years. This second WSES COVID-19 emergency surgery survey investigates the impact of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic on ES during the course of the pandemic.
Methods: A web survey had been distributed to medical specialists in ES during a four-week period from January 2022, investigating the impact of the pandemic on patients and septic diseases both requiring ES, structural problems due to the pandemic and time-to-intervention in ES routine.
Results: 367 collaborators from 59 countries responded to the survey. The majority indicated that the pandemic still significantly impacts on treatment and outcome of surgical emergency patients (83.1% and 78.5%, respectively). As reasons, the collaborators reported decreased case load in ES (44.7%), but patients presenting with more prolonged and severe diseases, especially concerning perforated appendicitis (62.1%) and diverticulitis (57.5%). Otherwise, approximately 50% of the participants still observe a delay in time-to-intervention in ES compared with the situation before the pandemic. Relevant causes leading to enlarged time-to-intervention in ES during the pandemic are persistent problems with in-hospital logistics, lacks in medical staff as well as operating room and intensive care capacities during the pandemic. This leads not only to the need for triage or transferring of ES patients to other hospitals, reported by 64.0% and 48.8% of the collaborators, respectively, but also to paradigm shifts in treatment modalities to non-operative approaches reported by 67.3% of the participants, especially in uncomplicated appendicitis, cholecystitis and multiple-recurrent diverticulitis.
Conclusions: The SARS-CoV-2 pandemic still significantly impacts on care and outcome of patients in ES. Well-known problems with in-hospital logistics are not sufficiently resolved by now; however, medical staff shortages and reduced capacities have been dramatically aggravated over last two pandemic years
An Observational Overview of Solar Flares
We present an overview of solar flares and associated phenomena, drawing upon
a wide range of observational data primarily from the RHESSI era. Following an
introductory discussion and overview of the status of observational
capabilities, the article is split into topical sections which deal with
different areas of flare phenomena (footpoints and ribbons, coronal sources,
relationship to coronal mass ejections) and their interconnections. We also
discuss flare soft X-ray spectroscopy and the energetics of the process. The
emphasis is to describe the observations from multiple points of view, while
bearing in mind the models that link them to each other and to theory. The
present theoretical and observational understanding of solar flares is far from
complete, so we conclude with a brief discussion of models, and a list of
missing but important observations.Comment: This is an article for a monograph on the physics of solar flares,

The aim of this analysis was to identify genetic variants that are associated with urinary sex-hormone levels and breast cancer risk. Methods: We carried out a genome-wide association study of urinary oestrone-3-glucuronide and pregnanediol-3-glucuronide levels in 560 premenopausal women, with additional analysis of progesterone levels in 298 premenopausal women. To test for the association with breast cancer risk, we carried out follow-up genotyping in 90,916 cases and 89,893 controls from the Breast Cancer Association Consortium. All women were of European ancestry. Results: For pregnanediol-3-glucuronide, there were no genome-wide significant associations; for oestrone-3-glucuronide, we identified a single peak mapping to the CYP3A locus, annotated by rs45446698. The minor rs45446698-C allele was associated with lower oestrone-3-glucuronide (â49.2%, 95% CI â56.1% to â41.1%, P = 3.1 Ă 10â18); in follow-up analyses, rs45446698-C was also associated with lower progesterone (â26.7%, 95% CI â39.4% to â11.6%, P = 0.001) and reduced risk of oestrogen and progesterone receptor-positive breast cancer (OR = 0.86, 95% CI 0.82â0.91, P = 6.9 Ă 10â8). Conclusions: The CYP3A7*1C allele is associated with reduced risk of hormone receptor-positive breast cancer possibly mediated via an effect on the metabolism of endogenous sex hormones in premenopausal women
High-Pressure Ozone-Induced Dissociation for Lipid Structure Elucidation on Fast Chromatographic Timescales
Ozone-induced dissociation (OzID) is a novel ion activation technology that exploits the gas-phase reaction between mass-selected ions and ozone inside a mass spectrometer to assign sites of unsaturation in complex lipids. Since it was first demonstrated [ Thomas et al. Anal. Chem. 2008, 80, 303 ], the method has been widely deployed for targeted lipid structure elucidation but its application to high throughput and liquid chromatography-based workflows has been limited due to the relatively slow nature of the requisite ion-molecule reactions that result in long ion-trapping times and consequently low instrument duty cycle. Here, the implementation of OzID in a high-pressure region, the ion-mobility spectrometry cell, of a contemporary quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometer is described. In this configuration, a high number density of ozone was achieved and thus abundant and diagnostic OzID product ions could be observed even on the timescale of transmission through the reaction region (ca. 20-200 ms), representing a 50-1000-fold improvement in performance over prior OzID implementations. Collisional activation applied prereaction was found to yield complementary and structurally informative product ions arising from ozone- and collision-induced dissociation. Ultimately, the compatibility of this implementation with contemporary ultrahigh performance liquid chromatography is demonstrated with the resulting hyphenated approach showing the ability to separate and uniquely identify isomeric phosphatidylcholines that differ only in their position(s) of unsaturation
The glacial landsystem of Fjallsjökull, Iceland: Spatial and temporal evolution of process-form regimes at an active temperate glacier
This study assesses the spatial and temporal evolution of the glacial landsystem signature at Fjallsjökull, southeast Iceland, using (a) mapping of the glacial geomorphology and surficial geology and (b) repeat uncrewed aerial vehicle (UAV) surveys. A small-scale (1: 15,000 scale) landsystem map has been compiled using LiDAR data (2011â2012) and historical aerial photographs (1945â1998), along with a large-scale (1: 2000 scale) map based on UAV imagery from May 2019. From our mapping and UAV surveys, we identify sediment-landform assemblages that are typical of active temperate glacial landsystems, including recessional push/squeeze moraines and intervening flutings, overridden moraine arcs, proglacial outwash (sandur) fans and linear/ribbon sandar. We recognize three landform zones that are defined by changes in moraine morphology and the nature of proglacial outwash deposition: (1) the outer foreland is characterized by proglacial outwash fans, overridden moraine arcs and broadly linear recessional moraines; (2) the middle foreland contains sawtooth moraines and linear sandar; and (3) the innermost zone comprises extremely sawtooth and hairpin moraines as well as associated crevasse-squeeze ridge limbs. This landform zonation reflects spatio-temporal changes in moraine-forming processes and outwash deposition as determined by changes in snout morphology and proglacial drainage characteristics. Within this general tripartite zonation, we also identify localized (azonal/intrazonal) sediment-landform assemblages that are not typically found at active temperate glaciers, including ice-cored/hummocky terrain and localized kame and kettle topography. Repeat UAV surveying in 2016â2019 has allowed us to capture and quantify recent intrazonal landsystem change at the southern glacier margin. We identify a switch from moraine formation to the development of ice-cored terrain and an ice-cored esker complex in association with the uncovering of a depositional overdeepening. Our study demonstrates the important role that variations in local boundary conditions (e.g. topography) can play in the process-form response of individual active temperate outlet glaciers, contributing to the expanding database on modern glacial landsystems
